Lexus
A sculptural chaise for Lexus’ ‘In Search of Takumi’ series.
Otis was chosen to commission a piece that reflected part of the Lexus LC coupe for the Lexus, ‘In Search of Takumi’ series and exhibition in 2020. Combining both modern digital machining and traditional leatherworking techniques, Otis created a large and flowing chaise that enveloped the sitter, floating them on a cantilevered frame.
The piece used two whole vegetable tanned hides from British tannery J & FJ Bakers, masters of hand finishing and currying, the practice of applying dyes, waxes and oils into the leather. The top is a large single panel that highlights the full character of the grain and unique markings to each hide. The chaise was hand sewn with a traditional running stitch in heavy linen thread to create a strong seam with an undulating pattern.
